ACL Tear of the Knee

What is an ACL tear ?

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a string-like tissue in the knee that links the thighbone to the shinbone. It is made of connective tissue and has poor healing potential. The ACL is one of the most important ligaments in the knee has it provides the stability necessary to pivot and change direction during physical activity. People from all ages are susceptible to ACL tear.

Why does the ACL tear?

ACL tears are one of the most common injuries in sports among active youth.

How are ACL tears treated?

An ACL can rupture partially or completely. Once completely torn, the ACL cannot regrow or heal on its own. A partially torn ACL can sometimes heal and support physical activity; however, this should be evaluated and determined by an orthopedic sports medicine specialist. Health conscious individuals who walk, run in a straight line, swim or ride a bicycle to stay active, may get sufficient relief from non-surgical treatments such as specialized physiotherapy.

ACL Surgery

If you have a persistent feeling of instability or giving way of the knee during physical activity despite physiotherapy, your doctor may recommend ACL surgery.

This is a minimally invasive procedure performed on an outpatient basis. Small incisions are made around the knee using specialized instruments and cameras to reconstruct your ACL. This minimally invasive technique typically results in less pain and a faster recovery. The ACL, which is a ligament (tissue linking bone to bone), is reconstructed using a tendon (tissue linking muscle to bone) from the same knee.

We pride ourselves on providing a warm and welcoming environment where you feel comfortable and supported throughout your recovery journey. Whether you’re dealing with a minor injury or a more complex condition, our team is here to help you reach your health and wellness goals.
